Trumpet

Trumpet has been around for millennia, but it was only 200 years ago that valves were added to make it what it is today. Since then it’s been used in classical music, in big bands and brass bands, in jazz and R&B.

The trumpet can shout, joyful and jubilant, or whisper, soulful and soft. Dizzy Gillespie played fast and furious; Chet Baker was smooth and sweet. Cat Anderson made it jubilant, and Nils Petter Molvaer did it dreamy.

At first, trumpet can seem a little intimidating, but once you get a feel for the buzz and control your tone and sound, its beauty and versatility open doors to wonder and joy.

Let's Play

Even greats get going here.

Making music starts with you producing your first sound, and getting a few fundamentals right.

This isn’t just true for beginners; sometimes even proficient professionals benefit from going back to the basics covered in this video.

Introductory Level

Right now, you:

  • Have never played trumpet before, or if you did it was so long ago, you’ve forgotten how to get a sound out of the thing.
  • Have a trumpet, but have no idea what to do with it except look at it with a glint in your eyes and a vision of playing your heart out in a band.
  • Have a collection of music that you love, and you’d love to be able to play some of it.

At the end of this course, you:

  • Will be able to play some music: you’ll know where to find the basic notes on your trumpet, you’ll be able to play melodies and read music.
  • Will be able to pick up your horn and play along with some great backing tracks.
  • Might find a song in your collection that you can play along with, and you’ll start hearing things musically that you weren’t aware of before.

In this course:

You’ll take your first steps to becoming a real musician. Spanning genres as wide as folk, Latin, jazz and pop, you’ll learn 6 original tunes and play along with some well-known songs.

You’ll learn the first basic notes on the trumpet. You’ll learn about posture, buzzing and breathing. You’ll learn about theory, start reading music, do some ear training with your voice and your instrument, and take your first steps as an improvisor. You’ll also play along with attractive backing tracks and learn how to practice with our Shedding Sessions.
